The Distraction

The bell for dinner rang soon after the men had left, so the women went together to the dining room. They mainly ate in silence except for the faint sound of thunder in the distance and the rain pattering against the glass of the windows.

Ilona couldn't manage to hide her worry from Delaney, so when the Duchess invited her to go to the sitting room, play cards, and have a drink of wine, Ilona accepted.

"That sounds nice," she said with a bit of a smile, "But let's play in your room instead. That way, we will have a view out the window of the street in case they come back again."

"Alright," Delaney nodded as she got up, "We can do that. Come on. Let's go upstairs."
