Rifts Pt. 1

-----------------Time Skip--------------------

Ruby POV:

It didn't take long for Blake to Calm Sapphire down enough for her to stop crying, and the embarrassed face Sapphire showed when she realized what she was doing was a sight for sore eyes; though it wasn't all sunshine and rainbows. Ever since this morning, Sapphire's been acting uncomfortably distant, and I don't like it. The usually very touchy-feely Fox Faunus hasn't initiated any physical contact all day; it's weird.

I silently gazed at the side of Sapphire's face as she silently scribbled on her papers. She is sitting to the right of Yang, who is sitting to the right of me; Weiss and Blake are sitting to my left.

Her complexion has improved since this morning but her atmosphere has remained rather bleak. On the outside, a stranger would say nothing seems wrong, but even just a cursory acquaintance would be able to tell that something is up. Her normally swaying tail and ears are unnaturally stiff. Every once and a while, she would gaze into the air, lost in her thoughts.

We obviously brought up some bad memories, but I…

I don't know what to do...

I feel guilt and self-deprecating thoughts snake their way into my head, so I tear my gaze from Sapphire and shake them away. Or at least I tried to, but…

Haaaah...

-Brrrrrriiiing!

The ear-piercing sound of a bell breaks me out of my thoughts and drags me back into the present. As my eyes wander around the room, I realize that class is already over, and Professor Port is getting ready for his closing remarks.

"Alright, that marks the end of today's lesson. Remember, becoming a huntsman is tough, but so are you!" He started with the same unbridled confidence he's had since day one.

I honestly can't remember much of what was taught in class today; it was all just kind of a jumbled blur in my head. I just couldn't seem to tear my thoughts away from Sapphire and the conversation from this morning.

I feel a frown make its way to my face when remembering this morning, but before I can spiral into self-derision, Sapphire robotically stood from the bench. She doesn't even wait for us before making her way out of the door.

She's been like this all day; avoiding us at every possible moment. It's not like she wouldn't respond when called out to, but she would be obviously uncomfortable and almost scared about what any of us wanted to say.

I just don't understand what's going through her head, and I don't know what to do...

"Haaah…" I sigh, aloud this time as if to force out the complicated mix of negative emotions that this day has brought.

Suddenly, I felt a hand land on my shoulder, and, with a glance in that direction, I saw Yang's silently comforting gaze directed at me. I wish that it would alleviate some of my worries, but I guess it's the thought that counts.

"What's wrong with you guys?" I hear a concerned but carefree voice call out.
