After the vampire had vanished from the area; it took Alex some time to recover from the blood loss. Luckily he was still conscious or who knows what would be their fate. The rest of Alex's watch was uneventful, by two in the morning Brandon had woken up and switched places with Alex allowing the youth to get some much-needed rest.

Though Brandon had seen that the boy was noticeably paler than normal, he did not inquire about the details. If he had known that a vampire had snuck past their line of defense and feasted upon Alex during the boy's watch, Brandon probably would have given up the idea of staying in the field. The fear that his party would abandon their plan so quickly because of a small incident like this forced Alex to keep his mouth shut about what had transpired during his vigil.
