Chapter 70

Lucinda's POV

After lunch with the McConaughey family I had helped Joy, Kathy and Lizzie clean up while the boys - uh men - were out back with Frank. The kids decided to play video games and then Grayson- well he stood in the doorway of the kitchen watching us clean and occasionally helping to lift something heavy.

Whenever he was told to join the boys - uh men - he would make some excuse to stay in the kitchen with us before Elijah and Donny dragged him outside.

"You do have an alluring presence about you..."

I turned my head to the sound of Lizzie's voice. She had a soft smile on her face while she drying the dishes.

"Pardon?"

Her smile grew even more as she focused all her attention on the plate in her hands.

"I see the way he looks at you... Grayson too even though he's an idiot. Now that I actually think about it their both idiots. Especially the one who's been alive for 27 years."

I giggle at her sudden statement. The way she deviated from her main point really makes her childish side shine through. Just then Kathy entered the kitchen.

"She's right. If I don't watch out I'll be out of husband before dinner time."

We all laughed together in unison. It's felt nice to be able to talk comfortably with people you just met for once. After the house was relatively clean everyone went thier separate ways and I was left to explore the house once more.

I was about to go check out the game room I passed by when I suddenly remembered something from our time at the Lake House. Immediately I turned around I found my way to the back door and opened it stepping into the backyard.

A large field of dandelions stood before my eyes. Probably the largest field I've ever seen. Donny really wasn't kidding when he said he had a landmark in his backyard too. I stepped closer to where the field began and ran my hand against the soft dandelion clocks.

"Believe me now?"

I turned to find Donny approaching me with a basket in his left hand. With his right hand he pushed his curly brown hair out of his face and I was captured in a mesmerising trance.

"To be honest I'm never really sure what to believe when it comes to you."

He stopped directly in front of me. So close I could hear his breathing and his body heat was mingling with my own. A wave of static tension rose between us like being stuck in and electric field. I could feel it and I definitely knew he could too. I looked up into his eyes and found him looking at me too.

"What's that supposed to mean?"

"Just that you're a little bit of a mystery to me... But I kinda like that."

"Then I guess you'll love this too."

I was confused before he held on to my hand and began to lead us into the field. The moment our hands made contact sparks ignited where our skin united. The feeling was so sudden that it caused me to gasp but ended up stumbling forward because he held my hand.

Either he can't feel the tension in between us or he's really good at ignoring it cause I was burning up. His back from my view looked absolutely mesmerising. But unfortunately for my choice of clothing today the little dandelions were tickling my feet and I ended up giggling.

He looked at me with a soft smile and gently eyes. How can someone be this flawlessly radiant and be in my presence. Once he saw my flushed face he smile grew even more. Like he knew what was going through my mind.

"What are giggling at?"

"Huh?"

He chuckled and I just melted.

What is going on with me?!

What kind of sorcery is this?!

"Uh- oh! The dandelions are tickling my legs..."

I hate how that sounded like a dumb excuse that just cause him to laugh even more. I smacked him on his back with a pout on my face.

"It's true!"

He looked back at me with another smile before he smirked.

This asshole!

"Sure it is... Now c'mon. We're almost there."

I let him pull me the rest of the short distance to a tree situated in the middle of the field. It was a good distance away from the house but not so much that you couldn't see it. The tree was surrounded by a pretty decent patch of grass which I found strange considering that we were in a field of dandelions.

"Tadaa!"

"Nice tree..."

"Thanks... Planted it myself."

I went up to the tree and placed my hand on the bark. The rough texture was in contrast to my skin but it felt nice.

"You planted this tree?"

He set the basket down and took out a blanket from it. He laid it on the ground and then began to take out various snacks from the basket along with a bottle of what looked like ice-tea.

"Yeah. I asked my dad to help me plant it when I was eight. Growing up in a big family can sometimes get suffocating- and don't get me wrong. I love my family but sometimes I just needed a little me time."

"I get that... So you've been coming here since you were eight?"

After he was done setting everything he brought on plates he pated the seat next to him and I sat down on the blanket next to him.

"Yeah... They never really minded since it wasn't that far from the house and they would also come here at times if they needed to unwind. But mainly it was my place."

"That's nice... I wish I had a place like that growing up."

He poured me a glass of ice-tea and handed it to me and I took a sip. Its was sweet and had a hint of lemon in it.

"It's absolutely gorgeous at night time. With the stars and the sound of crickets around you. Like a stolen moment in time."

I smiled fondly at his description of his favourite spot. It seemed like it meant a lot to him. And me being an agent of chaos decided to tease him a bit. He laid down on his back and stared at the sky. I laid down beside him and stares at the sky.

"I bet your brought all your bitches here and said those exact words everytime."

He turned his head to look at me and I turned too. Our eyes locked and for once it felt like I could see the real Donavan shining through those forest green eyes. He smiled softly.

"No. You're the first one."
