Evelyn, Part 2

Chapter 45: Evelyn, Part 2

My arms held my knees against my chest, and my dangling hand fiddled with the tall grass beneath me. The way the grass danced at each stroke of the wind, and how each flower swayed from its call just before sunrise calmed me. I could sense they were nearby. As the sun peeked over the horizon and showered beams across the sky, I heard footsteps. It was them. When I waved from my little alcove on the edge of the meadow, they both nodded in return. I quickly stretched before I stood up, and as soon as I did, Delling reached me. At first, we said nothing. We looked out at the burst of reds and yellows streaming from the sunrise, each threatening to quicken and change at any second.

“I remembered more. About my life back then,” I said, both of us still looking at the sky.

“And what did you see?”

“I saw you more than just that time in the forest, didn't I?” I paused to glance at him. “You were there when I died. I—I mean when Ailis died.”
