Envy

Nothing sharpens sight like envy.

BETHANY

I was sitting in the cafeteria joking and laughing with my friends pretending like I'm not silently fuming inside while discreetly watching Mason acting all lovey dovey with May and the new girl. Although, he seems to be trying hard not to make his interest the new girl obvious, but he doing a poor job at it, because I've caught him stealing glances at her a few times when he thought nobody was watching. But I probably noticed, cause I had made watching him my business and I can definitely tell that she's caught his attention.

I am sitting about four tables away from their usual table and the noise of Henry's gallible fans, lapping up and laughing so hard to his ridiculous jokes as usual is making it hard for anyone really hear anything else in the cafeteria.

I would've joined them at their table like I normally do if when I know my presence is not appreciated but I decided to take a break from pestering him today; after that debacle at the party over the weekend. A decision I now greatly regret as I watched Mason gently put his hands on May's cheeks and looking at her with the most sweetest expression I have ever seen on his face; a totally different look from his usual brooding one.

I had thought she was no competition but maybe I was wrong, cause that definitely looks a lot more than friendship from where I'm standing and I am not the only who noticed. Many students, especially ladies who are always fawning over him noticed the sweet exchange too. And if looks could kill, May would be buried 6 feet under by now in an unmarked grave far from civilization.

Everybody in school knew he has a soft spot for her, afterall she is the only girl he freely interacts with aside from his sister but this is on a whole different level; it looks far too intimate, a lot more than a platonic behavior between friends. And It's really a blow to my ego.

"Wow that is one romantic moment, I am so jealous that bitch. She's sure gotten him hooked with her tentacles. Although I'm seriously having trouble understanding what he actually sees in her, she so plain and weird." Lillian, one of the girls that follows me around whines out loud; voicing out my sentiment.

But I couldn't tell her that because that would be like admitting that despite my charm and popularity; I still lost a guy I am obviously interested in to a plain jane. It would cause unrepairable damage to my celebrity status and I can't have that.

So instead of admitting that my ever effective charm might not be as effective on the hottest and most desirable guy in school, I hide my frustrations behind my perfectly made up face wearing my signature perfect smile.

"Oh!" don't be silly, he is just being nice to her as usual, you know she doesn't really have any friends aside from him; and the rest of the guys only put up with her because of Mason's generous attitude, otherwise they wouldn't be friends with a girl like her under normal circumstances."

There was a chorus of acquiesce around the table before the chattering resumed and the girls moved on to another topic.

I would nod and join their chatter occasionally but my thoughts is back Mason and the girls who held each other hands and followed closely after Mason as he walked out of the cafeteria.

Now I know May is actually a competition but now, I'm also conflicted about the new girl. I know what I witnessed earlier was definitely an attraction, but I'm not sure whether to put her on my hit list right away or give it a bit more time before I make a decision about her.

But what is absolutely clear in my mind is that I will not allow a new girl to come out of no where to steal what is mine; And as for May, she's got something else coming if she thinks she could have anything more with Mason other friendship. He is mine, and I will eliminate anything and anyone who stands in my way.
