Coffee Shop

"So tell me about yourself," Josh grinned as him and Alex took their seats by a nearby window that faced facing the busy street. "Umm," Alex smiled as she thought of what to say. "My name is Alex, as you know," she grinned holding out her hand towards Josh."Yes," Josh smiled back as he took a sip of his expresso.

"I like to jog in the mornings after I get my daughter outta the house for school or whatever she decides she wants to do that day," Alex effused with a smile that made her eyes twinkle.

"You have a daughter? That's so cool I have a son. How old is your daughter?" Josh enthusiastically asked. "She's 9. The love of life, Briana is. She's so opinionated and has her own mind when it comes to pretty much anything. I really got lucky with her," Alex smiled as she thought of her baby girl. Briana made her very proud with anything and everything she did. She is truly her pride and joy in life.

"I know how you feel. My son Marcus is 13 but when he was your daughter's age he was so precious. He used to love helping me with everything and don't let me start cooking without him, he would have fit," Josh laughed remembering all the good times he had with his son at that age. "Awe, that's the cutest thing," Alex smiled. "How is he now?" She asked taking a sip from her caramel macchiato with extra whipped cream on top.

"He's great. But ever since he hit those preteen years all he wants to do is play Call of Duty and Fortnite. Sometimes he doesn't even come out of his room, I have to shut the power off for him to have a conversation with me," Josh explained flashing a forced smile. Him and his son haven't been as close as he would want them to be as of late. He misses the little things they used to do together like going to the park or playing uno every Friday night. Things just aren't the same between them anymore and Josh doesn't quite understand why.

Alex reached over the table and touched Josh's hand, trying to comfort him seeing the sad look that slowly appeared on his face when her pager suddenly started beeping. "I'm so sorry I have to go. One of my patients is going into labor right now," Alex said counting a few singles that she grabbed from her pocket and placing them on the table for the tip.

"No no no, don't worry about it. I'm sure we will have plenty of opportunities to make this up," Josh smiled, making Alex weak in the knees at how drop dead gorgeous he was. "Yeah me too," Alex smiled, backing away slowly and bumping into an older guy trying to take his seat. "I'm going to turn around now and walk regularly," Alex smiled as she pointed him fingers at Josh before bumping into another man that was getting up. "I'm so sorry," she said walking briskly out of the coffee shop. "She's a keeper," the man she bumped into said to Josh, making him smile from ear to ear as he shook his head.

After leaving the coffee shop Alex ran to her car, all the way across the park.

Scrambling into her car she managed to crank it up and speed outta the parking lot. She made it to the hospital within 25 minutes driving 15 over the speed limit and dogging all of the traffic agile she threw in her scrubs at every stop light.

Arriving at the hospital, Alex ran out of her car and into the building. She took the elevator up to the Labor and Delivery Unit. When the elevator stopped she got off and arrived just as they handed her patient her baby.

Alex's pov

"Damn I didn't make it in time," I cursed. I was really trying to be here. Ms. Williams wasn't due until a few more weeks. "Knock knock," I smiled as I walked into the room with the new mother as she held her baby and was chatting with the doctor who had delivered the beautiful baby boy. "Doctor Monroe, hi," Ms. Williams smiled. "Hi, how you guys doing?" I greeted back. "We're doing just fine. They said that you were on your way but this little guy couldn't wait any longer so Dr. Depp just did the procedure himself," Ms. Williams explained.

"Dr. Depp?" I asked, turning my head to see why that name was so familiar to me. "No, why are they doing this to me?" I smiled as I realized that it was Johnny, my old best friend from high school. "I'm quitting, honestly," he smiled back as he realized it was me. "You guys know each other?" Ms. Williams asked looking between the both of us.

"Yes, we were old best friends back in high school. I haven't seen him in about 10 years?" I explained turning towards Johnny. "Has it been that long?" He asked scratching the fuzz on his chin. "Yeah it really has," I confirmed. "Awe that's sweet, why don't you two go and catch up. We're all good here," Ms. Williams smiled, looking down at her beautiful baby boy. "Congratulations mommy," I smiled before walking out of the room with Johnny close behind.
