Chapter 26: Closing In

“We’ve been here before,” snapped Number 1, her lips pulling back in a snarl as she circled the clearing. “I thought you said you had the scent?”

Number 2 cringed at her vicious tone, his eyes darting around the foggy marsh land with distaste. He swatted at a giant mosquito. “I warned you, this swamp has too much magical life, it’s easy to cover tracks.”

“We’re falling behind. This is unacceptable.”

Number 2 brushed the spiderwebs off his suit jacket. “Give me a minute, I can’t concentrate on tracking with you constantly complaining.”

Before Number 2 could take another step, Number 1 slammed him into the trunk of a rotting tree, her sharp claws closing around his neck, “Do you have a death wish?”

He shoved her back, hissing.

They were both on edge, having not once stopped to eat or sleep since they began this mission. But, before the situation could escalate to one of flying claws and shredding teeth, a voice interrupted them.

“Greetings travelers, are you lost?”
