Gus called his unknown benefactor. "What do you mean you've been on the run?"
"Where's Miriam? Is she safe?"
Gus cleared his throat. He hadn't been looking forward to this conversation. None of the secrecy mattered anymore since she knew someone paid him to protect her. "She's with me."
"Where?"
Gus didn't answer.
"This is a secure line, Mr. Macpherson. You don't even know where you're calling."
"Or who," Gus added.
"That's not important. Give me the location and story."
"We're at a safe house in Pennsylvania. It seems Miriam's ex-husband left some sensitive material hidden in a portrait he gave her to keep."
"How sensitive?"
He swallowed. How much could he tell? For all he knew this man had security clearance. "Pages of a diary from a former Wise Guy."
"How former?"
"He was laid to rest two years ago."
"What did the papers say?"
"I can't reveal those details. They are part of an ongoing investigation."
"I'll let it go. You just keep her safe."
