48. The ambush

On Monday morning Hunter and Lyle rose long before dawn for Hunter to take Lyle to the hostel early enough, oblivious of the fact that Chloe and Isaac are about to be sedated and will by tonight be helplessly sitting taped to chairs. It is late in the afternoon when Hunter arrives back and he immediately contacts an ex-colleague at the murder and robbery squad for an appointment.

The sun is setting outside and Jack Welch has already switched on the lights because of the limited light from outside. They shake hands and smile at each other.

“Hunter, I heard you have moved into town and started your own detective service. Are you now spying on all the adulterers?”

Hunter smiles and throws down the file that he brought along on the desk in front of Jack while he answers: “I hope it won’t be necessary for your cute, little wife to contact me, Jack. You should have grown up by this time. I remember you were quite a Don Juan earlier.”
