Chapter 5

Mia closed the door to her room. She looked around and noticed how empty it seemed to be. There was a student desk in the corner and a double bed standing against the wall. It had small wooden bedside tables that looked to Mia like coffee tables.

The room was white but the furniture was all light brown. She had a built-in closet that was clearly empty when she opened the door. The bathroom only had a shower, a toilet and a basin that stood on a bathroom closet.

There was a knock on the door and when Mia answered the door Sam stood there with a girl that looked like she could be around her age. "Mia this is Luna she is one of our permanent members staying here as well. She will help you settle in," Sam said.

"Thank you, Sam," Mia said. Luna came in looked around and asked, "so what are you going to do here?" she asked. Mia looked at Luna and said, "I don't know yet, Mike is my uncle and I have to stay here until my parents come for me but that's if they come," Mia said.

"What do you mean?" Luan asked. "They were among those taken since they had rare elements and all," Mia answered. Luna covered her hand over her mouth and asked, "your parents were the latest victims?" she asked. "Yes and I am on their list as well, since I have can do more than one element," Mia said. "Well then that means we need to be careful, that's all besides that is the case for most of us living here," Luna said.

"So what do you do here?" Mia asked. "Well, here we do any job that comes our way but mostly its search and rescue. It's really important to work as a team here," Luna said.

"Sounds really interesting," Mia said. "It takes a while to learn the skills that you need. I am still learning and the training isn't easy," Luna said. "Well since I will be living here from now on I suppose I should start by asking my uncle what he thinks I should do. Then again I might want to find some bedsheets. This room is really empty," Mia said.

"We don't carry extra bedding here for newcomers. Usually, they have to bring their own things," Luna said. "Well then I suppose that means I am in a little of trouble," Mia said. "Why?" Luna asked.

"Because I only have the clothes on my back," Mia said. "Well then that means you will need a job to start earning money," Luna said. "Where do you find a job?" Mia asked. "The bulletin board always has odd jobs advertised. I can do a few jobs with you if you like," Luna asked. "Yes, but I think we should ask my uncle Mike if he's okay with it. My dad would usually say no to these things," Mia said.

Luna took Mia to her uncle and Mia asked him if he was okay with her doing odd jobs on the bulletin board. "Why do you need work?" he asked. Mia was a little embarrassed and replied, "the clothes on my back is all I have. I kinda need to buy more," Mia replied. Mia's uncle looked at her for a moment before replying. "Right you don't have anything. You do need money sorry I am not used to taking care of someone. Yes, you can take jobs on the bulletin board but try to work in teams," Mike said.

"Luna said she will do a few with me and I am planning to stay in this area," Mia said. "Good then, let me know when you get back," Mike said. Mia left the office and found Luna waiting outside the office for her. "What did he say?" Luna asked. "He said to let him know when we get back and I think we should stay in the area for now," Mia said.

"Right we could have unwanted visitors," Luna said. The two became an instant friend and found themselves starring at the bulletin board. Mia saw many jobs some of them required more people than her and Luna but she then found a job that looked like it was easy. "Luna look at this one, it seems to be close and it requires only to do garden work in a small garden for an old lady," Mia said.

"That can keep us busy all day long, you know that?" Luna said. "Yes, but look at the payment. It's not only money but there are a few unwanted things she's giving to. Maybe I can use some of them," Mia said.

Luna looked at the job and said, "well I suppose we can give it a try," Luna said.

Mia and Luna spend the rest of the day cleaning an old lady's garden. They pulled out all the weeds and planted all the flowers the lady wanted to be planted. Then they watered the garden and cut the grass. The sun was starting to go down when Sam stopped in front of the old lady's house. Mia was busy throwing away the last of the garbage when she saw Sam getting out of the truck.

"Your working already?" he asked. "I did ask my uncle, he said it was okay as long as we tell him when we get back. The job took us almost the whole afternoon but I think we are done," Mia said.

Luna came out of the house with the old lady who looked really pleased with what they did. "My garden looks beautiful now. Thank you" the old lady said. She paid gave them the money and gave them the things that she was throwing out. "I bought these bed sets and I dont like them anymore so you can each have one set," the old lady said. Mai noticed that amount the things the old lady was giving to them was bathroom supplies and some room decorations.

She looked at Sam and asked, "Will you let us put it on the truck, please?" Mia asked. "Yes well I was told to pick you up, you really did stay close to home with this job," Sam said. "Yes well with you know who looking for me I didn't want to take the chance," Mia said.

Sam didn't have to drive very far to get back to their base but Mia and Luna couldn't stop talking about how fun it was working outside. "I just hate it when I have to be indoors," Mia said.

"Yes but you do know we will have to work inside from time to time," Luna said as the truck was pulling up into the base. They got out and unloaded the truck. "Where were they Sam?" Mike asked. Sam smiled and said, "cleaning Lady Delila's garden around the corner. She gave them quite a big job but they got paid very well for the work that they did," Sam said.

Mike looked at the stuff on the back of Sam's truck and asked, "she gave you stuff for your room Mia?" Mike asked. "Yes well she paid us in money as well, but the job on the bulletin board said that it's money and a few other things she didn't need anymore," Mia said.

"That's great, how did you and Luna enjoy working together?" he asked. "We worked great together, no problems at all," Luna said. Mia took her stuff to her room and found everything was brand new and barely used. She placed the money on the desk and got busy setting up her bedroom.

Then the dinner bell sounded and Mia met Luna in the hallway so that they could go to dinner together. Mia was sitting down at the table when she heard something outside the base. She looked to see who it was but couldn't make out who it was until he burst through the window.

Mia stood back for a moment looking in the direction of where the man came from. She focused for a while until she saw who threw the man through the glass window. She didn't have to wait long before her uncle walked through the window. "Mia how nice to see you, fancy seeing you here of all places?" her uncle said but Mia didn't answer him back at all.

"She was focused on her hearing and soon realised that her uncle wasn't alone. Luna wanted to use her power but Mia stopped her. "Mia what is wrong?" Luna asked. Mia shook her head and said, "he is not alone, there are others outside waiting to ambush anyone that attacks," Mia said.

Mia just stared at her uncle and didn't respond to anything he was saying. Mike walked into the room and said, "what are you doing here, Zack?" he asked. "I came to get my niece Mia here," he said. "Forget it i am not going with you, if you really wanted to come and get me tell me why did you bring your men with you?" Mia asked.

"You father told me to come and get you Mia," Zack said. "He did not, my dad would be coming for me himself. He never trusted you to begin with," Mia said.
