Chapter 32

Mia was slowly waking up and found herself on a soft white bed. She looked around the room confused and as she tried to sit up. She felt her head spinning. The doctor came into the room and said, "you're finally awake is see?"

"What happened?" Mia asked. The doctor looked at Mia and said, "something in the storm made you sick. You are not the only storm user out there and now the government knows it as well. What we don't understand is why it made you so sick. Kevin and Mike can count themselves lucky you were not alone when you got so sick," the doctor said.

Mia laid back down before remembering her puppy, "what about Hero, is he okay? If I was sleeping who was feeding him?" Mia asked worriedly. "Red took care of Hero, he said he will bring him to you as soon as you feel up to taking care of him," the doctor said and left the room.

Mia looked out of the window and was surprised to find that the sun was shining. "Just how long was I out for?" Mia wondered out loud. "A few days, you had us really worried Mia?" Kevin said. "Sorry Uncle, I didn't mean to worry you but I don't understand what happened. How can another storm user make me so sick?" Mia asked.

"I have been in contact with a few people to try and understand that one myself but there is no information available yet. They will let us know when they do have something. I did send them all the information we collected during the storm. Tell me at the cabin you didn't feel anything did you?" Kevin asked.

"No, the floodwater was a problem and the wind. I was worried the cabin wouldn't stand in the storm," Mia said. "Yes well the cabins completely destroyed, you will have to stay here until we can find you better housing," Kevin said. "What about Hero? Can he stay two?" Mia asked.

Kevin looked at Mia and said, "yes he can stay, we don't know where he came from yet but he isn't a wild wolf pup that I can guarantee," Kevin said. "What do you mean?" Mia asked. "We think he might be an Alaskan malamute. They are usually used as sledge dogs and in some cases hunting. He is definitely in the wrong place," Kevin said.

"But white the right person?" Mia said. "What do you mean Mia?" Kevin asked. "I have a mega-storm ability, if he's a working dog maybe he's what I need," Mia said. "His kind isn't for amateurs like you Mia, I agree you need a strong partner but I don't think it's an Alaskan Malmute. I suspect I know who his owner is, but we will have to wait and see," Kevin said.

"So I am alone once again?" Mia said without thinking. Kevin looked at Mia but left the room without saying anything. Amber came into the room and started to talk to Mia. "So what do you do when you're alone at the cabin?" she asked. Mia knew she was trying to start a conversation and decided she would love the company.

"I draw things I remember like places my parents lived. Rivers and flowers sometimes I draw people two," Mia answered. "You're an artist then?" Amber asked. "Yes, mom only taught me how to draw to help with the training. Dad didn't take it easy when he trained me," Mia said.

"She didn't like that, I mean your mom didn't like that did she?" Amber asked. "No, she said my dad shout take it easy with me. She always said he was training me like he was preparing for war," Mia said. "War, why would he push you so hard?" Amber asked.

"I think it's because he knew my powers were dangerous and I needed to learn how to control them," Mia said. "Having your powers seem to be a bad thing," Amber said. "No not really, I mean yes it has its bad times but there is also the good things like being able to see what others can not see. Like night vision and my hearing you know I can hear bird calls most wouldn't hear with their hearing," Mia said.

"I heard your hearing was sensitive but I didn't think it was that sensitive," Amber said. "It's a pain sometimes because I can hear things no one else can. For example, the truck that just drove on the road not far from here," Mia said. Amber rushed to the window and said, "how is that possible, we can not hear the traffic from this building?" Amber said.

"I always thought my hearing and vision was normal but now I see it abnormal," Mia said. Amber looked at Mia and said, "your abilities are a gift, Mia. Yes sure it has its disadvantages but it also has its advantages. I am sure if you train hard you can find ways to control it, if you like I can help you?" Amber offered.

"Does it involve a tv," Mia asked. "No, but it does involve music," Amber said. "Okay, let's try it then," Mia said. "I'll be back I need to go and fetch something real quick," Amber said and rushed out of the room.

Mia laid in the quiet room for a while and it wasn't long before Red came to sit with her. "Hero went back to his owners didn't he?" Mia asked. "Yes we found them, they thought they would never see him again. His name is Lucky and I will say this the name fits him well," Red said.

"What is everyone at the base doing," Mia asked. "Since when do you want to know about the base?" Red asked. "Well then do you know when I can go home. It's a lot better cleaning a floor or something than laying here doing nothing," Mia said.

"O sorry I didn't realise you were trying to start a conversation," Red said. "Yea, my uncle said there is another storm user. Do you think they are more powerful than me?" Mia asked. Red looked at Mai and then out of the window. From what I can tell they are more powerful but what we don't know is. Is it this person's true power or artificial?" Red said.

"Dad mentioned to me that there are some people that use artificial gear to boost their power. He said I should never even consider it. In fact, he banned me from even using it. He did in fact show me what the gear looked like but he said, it's hard to predict how I would respond to it. After all, a picture is far from the real deal," Mia said.

"So your father did tell you about the artificial gear?" Red said. "Yes, he suspected I would not do well with it, my mom has the artificial gear and she brought it home once. I was very small dad said it was the first time mom brought it home and she was forced to take it straight back to base. It makes me really sick," Mia said.

"Interesting how many places your parents worked?" Red said. "Yea they moved a lot but usually it was to teach me how to handle my power in different areas. Dad was trying to get a post in Alaska but was denied and they would not give him time off. He wanted to train me in an area where no one lived. You know test my power and train me to use it normally," Mia said.

"So his plan was to train you he just didn't have the time. It would make sense why he would want to train you so far out. Its makes sense it would be a lot safer and you can learn how to use your powers in smaller ways, like clearing fog or creating fog," Red said.

"Yea only dad never got the opportunity, he said the risk is too big to train me anywhere near people," Mia said.

"Yes and this storm is a perfect example of why you should be careful when using mega-storm," Red said.

Amber came into the room and said, "thank you Red for keeping her company." Red noticed the portable radio and a cd in Ambers's hand. "What are you planning on doing with those?" he asked. "I thought of a way to help Mia. With her hearing, I thought we use this old radio and calm music and see what is the loudest Mia can hander the sound. If she gets used to the sound, she should turn the volume up but in baby steps," Amber said.

"That might actually work," Red said. Mia looked at Red and Amber and said, "well if you think it will work then let's try." Amber placed the CD in the portable player and put the volume as soft as she could before hitting play. "Tell me when you hear the music okay Mia," Amber said.

Mia listened to the soft music and it wasn't long before Mia said, "stop right there, that does not hurt." Amber and Red looked surprised at Mia and said, "that's loud enough for even me to hear. Maybe the problem with your hearing is the type of technologies used," Red said.

"Could be becasue this is an old radio, it's not modern at all," Amber said. That night Kevin came into the room and found Mia, Red and Amber talking nonstop but the sound of music is what surprised him.

"You can listen to music now?" he asked. "This sound level is what she can handle, so I think we should be able to find her a place to stay. I think Mia will be able to live on base as long as we do it in steps. Maybe that's what Mike did wrong," Amber said.
