Chapter 44: Harper Creek

The house I grew up in was the largest and grandest in King. It had been the first house built in town, and it was designed and paid for by Gravis King himself, the founder of our quirky little community. The grounds covered several acres and included a massive lawn and several separate gardens. It was rumored to contain one of the most powerful mystical epicenters within King.

So I didn’t expect to be impressed by Harper Creek as Cathryn and I turned down the road toward the house. When we rounded the first corner and the large white house came into view, though, my mouth dropped open a little.

“This is home.” Cathryn slid me a sideways glance, with a smirk. “I hope you’ll feel that way, too. Harper Creek is headquarters for Carruthers, but it’s also my family’s center. My great-great-great-grandfather built this house, and it’s been ours for well over a century.”
