Chapter 46: Making plans

Consciousness slammed back into my body with a jolt, and my head rocked into the top of the chair.

“Nell?” Zoe leaned over me, peering into my face. “Are you all right?”

I breathed in and out, letting the feeling come back into my fingers and toes. “I’m okay.” I licked my lips and let my heart slow to a reasonable rate. “I am. I’m okay.”

“Did you make it there?” Cathryn’s voice was anxious.

“Yeah.” I flexed my hands. “I did. I was in the camp, and I saw Rafe. He’s alive.”

Both women sat back in their chairs, a measure of relief evident on their faces. I hated to take that away from them, but they had to understand just how little time we had.

“But he won’t be for long. They plan to kill him tomorrow.” I ran down a brief synopsis of what I’d heard in Georgia.

Cathryn closed her eyes. “Tomorrow. There’s no way ... unless we contact the authorities and convince them to go into the camp, and even then, Rafe would be dead as soon as those people realized they were compromised.”
