Chapter 51: Screaming like she was being murdered

Elisabeth held her breath. 'So there was no possibility that it was you in that Narrabundah supermarket the night Christos Stavros was knifed to death instead of Russell Montgomery?'

His head jerked up and the photographs spun to the floor. Injured and angry he cried, 'No!'

Elisabeth inclined her head and allowed a small silence to develop while the sheriff's officer collected the scattered prints. Dropping her volume Elisabeth began to draw a different picture. 'Mr Waite, cast your mind back to that night at the motel. Try to remember exactly what happened when Russell walked out of the bathroom.'

Waite's chin sank to his chest. When it came up he said, 'Lisa was all excited about it happening. When Russell came out she told him about it. She didn't think anything of it. I didn't either but because the guy'd been knifed I joked that Russell should show us his to prove it wasn't him.'
