Fourteen year old Tyler and his little sister Emma meet their neighbors foster son, fourteen year old Calem at their beach house in Hampton Bays, New York. After discovering unusual fishermen and nearly drowning, Emma discovers that there is something in the water that helps save her. After sneaking out to the beach at night, the kids discover a mermaid named Acrilla who helped Emma. She takes them to her underwater home where she, and the other mermaids live. Unfortunately, they are in danger from humans who take sea mammals and sell them for money. It is up to Tyler, Emma, and Calem to help the mermaids protect the wild ocean animals while keeping it a secret from their parents.

Back at the beach house, the nightly news shows the story of the beach day with beachgoers staring out in the water. The report shows how many beach goers captured the scene on their camera phones, and then the camera shifts to Tyler being rescued by the mermaids from the shark who tried to attack him. The mermen are shown pushing Tyler to the lifeguard boat. Tyler and his family watch it on the TV as the story bursts all over social media, making the story go viral. Tyler looks at his phone as messages from friends back at home are amazed and stunned by his encounter. 


“See?” Emma asks. “You are famous. Everybody knows who you are. You are going to be the coolest kid in high school.”


“I don’t think my fame will last too long,” Tyler says. “These kinds of stories end in a knuckle touch or a tease.” Chris and Jill are excited to know that their family is part of a story they will never forget.
