32. Defence part 3

Gareth slept through the night with the sound of explosions as his lullaby, he slept for 10 hours before he got up. Mikage had also woken up this time it didn't sleep very deeply probably still a little nervous with the constant gunfire in the surroundings.

Getting changed and wearing his equipment he set off and Mikage was waiting for him at the entrance and climbed up his body and hid in his collar. After checking everything he set off, it was still dark for another 2 hours but the various light fixtures still provided lots of light making it seem like day.

Gareth still needed to be wary once he left the protection of the walls as there was a possibility of incoming artillery heading towards him. Luckily as it was night time the frequency of projectiles had reduced greatly and Gareth had reached the North side of the inner wall where an elevator was waiting for him, getting in he was lifted up to the top of the wall where he met soldiers standing guard and asked the situation on the frontlines.

The aliens were still sending wave after wave of troops to attack the wall and by now a large pile of alien corpses had littered the battlefield, creating an obstacle for the aliens.

As for the humans, nearly all the ground defences had been destroyed or broken through leaving only a few unmanned auto turrets firing at the never ending horde of aliens.

There were also casualties on the human side, about 4000 soldiers had been severely injured and 1000 had perished, there were still 40,000 still fighting.

As the soldier continued his recall a bright streak of light shot from the horizon and headed in a particular direction, Gareth kept following the projectile where it then struck a small building it exploded and the building was damaged, suddenly the visor on the helmet began malfunctioning and something became disabled.

The soldier immediately contacted their officer in charge and after a few minutes it was reported that the advanced radar and positioning system console was hit and was damaged. Engineers had already gone over to access and try to repair the damage but without it, the soldiers on the wall would not be able to avoid incoming artillery.

As there was still less than 2 hours before night ends, the soldiers could only hope that the engineers could fix it in time.

A few hours past and daylight shone down on the land, but the military didn't seem happy to have survived another day, it was reported earlier that the radar system was fairly damaged and would take a day in the least for it to be operational.

One day fighting blind was disastrous and who knew how many casualties would incur a day later. The higher ups manoeuvred the soldiers in a spread out formation to reduce incoming casualties, the soldiers also turned on their energy detection system to help foresee incoming artillery fire.

They also increased the fire rate of the mortar turrets hoping to thin out the enemy artillery, after that all they could do was pray.

When the light streamed down on the land the Cresomorphs had changed their attack strategy and begun adding more ranged attacks to the wall.

2 hours went by and it seemed that nothing had changed but the humans were frantically moving and had their awareness utilised to the extreme. Even then the casualties began to climb, first hour it was 85 dead and 200 injured then the second hour was 400 dead and over 700 injured.

The cresomorphs had noticed the strange behaviour and upped their attacks, Gareth watched as the human casualties began to climb, he requested for binoculars to watch the fighting unfold.

The soldier nodded and handed a spare powered binoculars to him, when Gareth used the binoculars he was shocked and instantly pushed the group of soldiers away and those soldiers were shocked by

Gareth's strange behaviour the next second a stray projectile hurtled to where they were previously and the soldiers tried dodging but was too late to react.

Gareth didn't have time to move after shoving the soldiers so he was caught in the blast and knocked off the wall. The soldiers who were pushed had only been sprayed with sparks from the aftermath, the lucky group suddenly saw Gareth was very close to the blast and saw a figure shooting out of the explosion and fall down the wall.

*thump!*

Gareth landed back first and he felt his head ringing and his body on fire, he unsteadily got to his feet and realised that his armour was full of burns so he hurriedly took the damaged armour off. Just as he did the armour crumbled into pieces of molten residue. As for Gareth he had suffered a dislocated jaw, multiple burns and 2 fractured ribs. He was also winded and as coughing out some smoke, by that time the soldiers who he saved had come down to check in on him.

The soldiers wanted to get him to the medical bay but Gareth waved his hand saying it was not needed. Finally clearing his lungs Gareth stood up, and requested to use the radio, he didn't know if it was the impact but Gareth got an idea when he saved those soldiers.

The soldiers didn't refuse and one of them gave them his communicator, Gareth climbed the wall while the soldiers followed him some of the brighter soldiers having an inkling of what he was about to do.

On the outer wall, a high ranked officer was currently having a hard time, she was unable to do much to help the soldiers with the incoming artillery so she was not in a good mood.

A message requesting her popped up and she immediately declined not interested with what that soldier had reported, however a soon as she declined another message popped up from the same sender.

Annoyed she answered and was going to berate the soldier when she heard an unfamiliar voice. The voice recognition did not match any of the soldiers in the base and she could only assume it was from a refugee but how would a refugee gain access to a communicator.

The message reported a co ordinate on the wall that an incoming strike would land and the officer almost ignored it but considered and sent a message to the relevant personnel.

At the coordinates a 20 soldiers were in a spread out formation when they receive the command to retreat they didn't hesitate and immediately retreated 2 seconds later a energy projectile landed at the spot they were just in and the group were shocked. They immediately received the order to return to position and open fire.

The officer received a report that a projectile had landed at the location but the group had dodged it in time. Pleasantly surprised she was wondering how the man on the other side could see that far as no man even with the various genetic modifications could see that far unless the eyes were cybernetic. Still she kept her mouth shut and continued relaying commands to the various personnel from co ordinates she received from the other end of the line.

Gareth was up on the wall watching the horizon with the binoculars from time to time he would roughly mention some coordinates and he could see the various troops on the wall manoeuvring about. He was pleased that he could participate in the war and he didn't need to shoot at all.
