Chapter 6

Damian got into his study room after spending some time with his daughter and grandson.

The study room was on the third floor with some swords, a white armour and a clock cast inside a wooden frame being the only decor. The study table had some documents and letters.

He sat down on the chair in from of the study table and picked up a folded document. After opening it he began reading it slowly turning one page after another.

The document contained news from the capital and some surrounding countries and it showed the date of the previous week.

The capital city was very far away and it took almost a month of travel in a straight line if travelled by a horse carriage.

So it was not common for a newspaper to be available in a faraway town like Edgekeep. The only reason Damian was able to have it here was simply because of his connections.

The newspaper had news regarding the war as well as some other crimes and announcements the kingdom made In the past few days.

The newspaper was only produced once a week or even between two weeks depending on the situation. Only some nobles had access to the latest news on an everyday basis.

Damian sighed while reading about the war and casualties showed in there. While the casualties shown were not even above a thousand, he knew that it was just a simple cover to hide the reality from the citizens.

He put down the newspaper and started doing his paperwork for the morning.

...

The couple departed from the quarters and separated shortly after. The husband wearing his leather armour and equipped with a wooden shaft walked towards the main entrance while his wife entered the mansion along with some other women.

The husband walked with the other guards. The first thing the guards had to do immediately after coming inside the mansion parameter aside from equipping themselves was to assemble in front of the mansion.

While walking, a slightly muscular man walked beside him and put his hand around his shoulder.

"Hey, Jaiden! Heard you went to the wisewoman yesterday; is it good news or something?"

Jaiden looked over to his side towards the muscular man while shocked slightly but also a bit embarrassed. "When did it spread this much? It hasn't even been that much time from when we went to see the wisewoman."

The muscular man just about to laugh when he stopped and looked at Jaiden with a shocked expression. "Huh? Wait, you really went there?"

Jaiden only now realised that his other fellow guards looking at him with different expressions.

"Don't tell me you were only teasing me?" He asked noticing their expressions.

The muscular man scratched his head for some time while saying in low voice. "Well, it was Jake who was shouting about it yesterday when we went drinking. But looking at it now you really did go there. Hahaha..."

Following him, the other guards also started laughing.

The others also started to ask questions.

"What did she say are you gonna be a father?"

"Really? That's great news, if it's true the captain will be happy to hear it."

"I was wondering why you were talking to the old man Morris early in the morning, so that's why."

Jaiden scratched his head hearing them talk about it and got embarrassed.

Because the town did not have a lot of people almost everybody knew each other to a certain extent. So whenever there was anything happening in the town people would hear it in a short time.

There were not many children in the town. The townsmen were always happy whenever there was a newborn.

While talking about the soon to be born child they arrived at the small area filled with other guards who had arrived earlier than them.

Most of the people were talking in groups, while their topic differed some were also talking about the birthday the chief was going to celebrate of his grandson the next month.

As soon as Jaiden and his company arrived the muscular man shouted about him being father and more guards circled around him either congratulating him or giving some advice.

Soon their captain arrived and started instructing them exercises which was a routine set by their chief. While instruction he also heard about Jaiden and congratulated him in the passing while also suggesting some help if needed.

...

While Jaiden started his duty outside his wife Renee got to work alongside other maids and servants inside the mansion.

The servants who arrived early in the mansion were mostly of higher ranking and were trusted servants who had been serving there for more than a decade.

While others who arrived after morning were mostly new. The maids did not have any difficult tasks to do but only slight cleaning and arranging things in a proper way after someone used them.

As well as looking after the needs of other workers inside the mansion.

News of the couple waiting for the child spread inside the mansion making it a topic of gossip.

Renee had been constantly bombarded with advice from the other maids who were mothers.

The day slowly passed without anything particular happening. The chief also made a trip to the town and markets as this was his daily routine.

But nowadays he brought his grandson with him too whenever he got the chance.

He also heard about the couple having a baby but only listen to it and got to his tasks.

When the evening came Jaiden and Renee got help from the guards' captain to write the reasoning letter for the leave and took it to the elder Morris who was again working behind the table after returning from school.

He read the letter and nodded showing his approval. After thanking the elder, the couple took their leave after finishing their work and walked towards their home.

While walking home they picked up some ingredients for dinner and the early breakfast for the next day. The chief made some arrangements for lunch at the mansion and people did not have to worry about food while working.

So most workers working inside the mansion only had to worry about the dinner and the family members.

Just when they were about to go inside their house they noticed the old man sitting in front of his house with his eyes closed while sipping tea.

They only now remembered that the old man had asked them to go to him in the evening.

Jaiden told his wife to go ahead while he took the things they bought from the market inside his house.

Renee slowly walked towards the old man's house which was just beside them and opened the gate.

Hearing the gate open the old man enjoying his tea opened his eyes as he watched Rennee come inside his yard.

He stood up while putting down his cup. "You came early today. Come inside the house."

The old man nodded his head and turn around to open the door to his house and enter.

Renee walked into the yard and heard him speak but before she could reply he was already inside the house. So she could only follow him slowly.

After entering the house the old man came to his living room. The house looked somewhat old but at the same time had a refreshing feel to it.

Even though the living room was not big it had some books and furniture to sit on. The old man was waiting by the door when Renee finally crossed the hallway to the living room.

She felt a refreshing aura inside the house making her comfortable as it made all the fatigue from work fade away.

She bowed towards the old man thanking him while coming inside the living room.

"My husband will be here shortly he went to put some things in the house."

The old man said nothing and only nodded his head.

Renee sat on one of the chairs while the old man went inside another room coming back with glasses of water.

After putting down the glasses he asked. "Would you have some tea or something similar?"

"No no, the water is enough," Renee replied hurriedly as she did not feel good about making the old man work too much.

The old man smiled and sat down in front of her.

Renee drank the water as she was thirsty after all the walking. She was surprised as she drank the water.

Even though it looked the same as any other water she had it tasted a bit sweet and more refreshing than normal. Her mind suddenly felt a lot clear and she became calmer.

They talked about her day at work and some other stuff she had heard about while talking to her colleagues.

Shortly, hurried footsteps were heard as someone knocked on the door. The old man got up and opened the door showing Jaiden outside the house.

Jaiden bowed his head slightly." We appreciate you for having us uncle Grey."

The old man nodded his head while telling him to come inside the house.
