Chapter 10

Aurora

The next day I woke up with renewed excitement rather than dread, since my job at the post office was on alternate days, I didn't have to get up earlier than necessary. The reporting time for 'Calloway Constructions' was at 8am, so I got up exactly at 6:30am and went about my business. I was standing in front of the floor length mirror at 7am with only my bra and panties thinking about what I should wear today. I wanted him to take me seriously and know that I was just as serious about this job, so I picked up a crisp white shirt and folded its sleeves to end right below my forearm. I paired it with knee length black skirt and the only black pumps I owned, to give it an all business look I wore simple pearl earrings and styled my hair into sleek high ponytail.

Nothing too flashy, simple in a regal manner, I winked at my reflection in the mirror and gave the woman a thumps up, I applied light makeup to cover up my freckles and painted my lips cherry red. Well… damn! If I didn't know any better, I looked like a hot shot lawyer in this outfit, I picked up my classic black tote bag and made my way towards the living room where Amelia was already preparing breakfast for mother.

"Good morning Amelia!" I said cheerfully, she looked up at me in surprise but wished me "good morning" and gave me her megawatt smile, "You look positively radiant, my dear" Amelia commented, taking in my appearance. "I feel that way too, Amelia" I replied and made my way to the counter where she had prepared a salami sandwich for me, I took a bite and instantly moaned "how am I ever going to repay you for making this haven of a sandwich for me?" I asked and she chuckled at my comment.

I quickly prepared tea for myself and poured it into a thermos, "I'll be back by around 6:30pm in the evening, after that you can obviously go home" I told Amelia and she beamed at me "that sounds great, I hope you have an exciting first day my dear" "I am sure I'll do great" I replied and made my way out of the house, I felt giddy with nerves but they were good nerves, the thought of working for a real time company was exciting just as much as it was terrifying.

I reached at the office exactly at 7:45am and was surprised to find the sweet receptionist Bianca at her desk. "Good morning Bianca" I greeted her and made my way towards her desk, she narrowed her eyes at me and checked me out from head to toes, then a slow whistle left her lips and her mouth formed a grin, "Damn! Don't you clean up nicely Aurora" I blushed at her comment and said a meek "thank you".

She chuckled and shook her head, "Boss man told me, you got the job, and asked me to prepare your paperwork but before that I'd like to show you to your desk, follow me" Bianca said and we made our way to my desk which was situated right in front of Michael's office, Bianca explained that the boss might need me at any moment so it was better to be placed somewhere near him.

"I kept your documents on the desk, check them out, sign them and bring them back to my desk. I'll give you your identity card after that, any doubts?" she asked with a raised eyebrow "no, I think I am good for now," "great, I'll leave you to it then" she turned around and started to leave, when a question popped in my mind. "Hey wait! Do you know when Mr. Calloway will be arriving at the office?" she turned around and gave me a weird look.

"He's at a new construction site this morning, who knows when he'll return" Bianca shrugged, "He likes to over-look his project's personally" I nodded "okay, I'll sign these and bring them to you" I said pointing at the papers. She left me then and I took my time to look over the legal documents, they were very precise and mentioned every detail, the lawyer surely did a fine work. I quickly scanned through the rest of the pages and signed them one by one.

I made my way to Bianca's desk again and handed her the papers, "I'll pass the paperwork to HR, meanwhile, this is your card" Bianca said handing me a sky blue card with my name and picture on it, "I'll get you logged into the office system, and then we'll go through the software you'll be using to keep Mr. Calloway's schedule on point" Bianca explained everything perfectly and honestly it wasn't all that difficult, all I had to do was arrange the emails in the order of importance and go through all of Michael's meetings and schedule them according to the time of preference.

By the time Bianca was done with me, I got the handle of things and she even complemented me at how quickly I could grasp onto a seemingly difficult software, "You're doing great for your first day Aurora, I have a feeling you'll last longer than boss man's previous P.A.'s" I smiled at her good naturedly and thanked her for helping me out.

It was well past lunch time now and I still had tons of emails to review, by the looks of it, I could guess that the last P.A. didn't do a good job at arranging them and it became increasingly difficult to do my job but I was determined to prove my worth, I was determined to show him I could handle anything that was thrown at me. So, I skipped lunch and went on with my work, it was late afternoon when I felt a presence looming over me and I looked up, wrong move. My eyes clashed with his blue orbs and an instant spark went through us, it was unnerving sometimes to be in his presence, to feel this connection and yet do nothing to feed it, I was guilty but not stupid enough to think we had another chance, I didn't deserve another chance, even if I apologized for my wrong doings, it wasn't enough, nothing was enough and hence I wouldn't say 'sorry' for my mistakes. Because I know, he wouldn't understand.

"You are settling in well, I see" he spoke into the silence and I nodded "yes, Bianca did a good job at getting me acquainted with the office system" and because I couldn't resist keeping my mouth shut, I added "are my clothes 'work appropriate' today Mr. Calloway?" I asked sweetly, batting my eye lashes at him. Michael turned visibly red at my comment and I bit my lip to hide my grin, it was always easy to rile him up.

"I need you in my office in five minutes" he said briskly and turned around to leave, a smile tugged at my lips, 'somethings never change'. Shaking my head, I picked up a notepad and pen and made my way to his office. Tapping the door twice, I waited for him to call me in, "Come in" his deep voice came from the other side of the door and I scurried inside.

"Please have a seat miss Sinclair" I dutifully sat down on the chair and waited for him to continue "apart from what you are already doing for me, I would like to give you a few personal tasks to handle as well" I nodded, I know what a P.A.'s job consists of, so I was ready for it. "You see, I take my morning coffee very seriously, so make no mistakes while you get my expresso with double shots, and please keep it ready before I enter my office" I blinked a couple of times to make sure this was really happening, before I could get anything out of my mouth he continued "my business suits are due every Wednesday, so you have to collect them from the laundry house near the office" revenge on point Calloway, way too go.

He was smirking now, like he just won some unannounced battle between us. "Oh, and one more thing, for lunch you have to pick up my favorite…" I finished for him "chicken mayonnaise sandwich" his lips thinned in a straight line. I got up and spoke "with extra tomato, because you like the juiciness" we stared at each other for a beat before I broke the silence this time "it wasn't a lie Michael" I turn around and leave before I say something I'll regret later.
