I'm finally done getting ready and Jacob takes me down the stairs and out the door. In front of me, in the driveway, is an old style Mustang with a white body and a black racing stripe. Jacob doesn't waste a second but rather leads me to the passenger door. He opens it for me and I slide in onto the nice black leather. I buckle up and he hops into the driver's seat.
"What do you think about my car?"
I was kind of stunned to be honest but I smiled and replied, "It's nice but I didn't think you had a car?"
Now he looked mortified, "Come on now. Why would you think that?"
"Let's see. You live in a cave, walk around not wearing anything but shorts, you refused to move into the house Ethan is more than willing to give you. Shall I continue?"
He was smiling now. "No you've made your point. So where to Princess?"
I blushed but said, "Well I've never been here, wherever we are, so show me around."
He accelerated and weaved along the road. I stared out my window taking in the scenery. There's a lot of trees and shrubbery but that doesn't tell me much. Finally we pulled into a town and Jacob parked in front of this cute little café. He walked over to my door and helped me out.
The café's name is Moonlight Café and it is set on the outskirts of town. When we got in Jacob led me to the back of the café and he sat with his back against the wall and I sat on the other side of the booth. A waitress came up and offered us our menus and got our drink order.
I couldn't help but feel insignificant as she kept staring at Jacob but he paid her no mind being very basic in his responses. When she left to get our drinks I decided to look at the menu while Jacob just sat back looking at me. After deciding what I want to eat I sat my menu down and looked at Jacob, "Are you always going to stare at me like this?"
He leaned forward and replied, "Well yeah. You're not officially my girl so I have to let guys know to stay back and keep their distance. Otherwise I might have to break some jaws."
"You wouldn't."
Smiling he said, "Babe, remember how you felt with that waitress?" I nodded feeling the anger rise up again. "Well multiply that by 10 and that's how I feel. This wolf thing is intense. You'll feel it when I turn you."
"Does it hurt?"
His expression changed, "It might. I've seen some wolves changed where it hurts a lot but others don't really feel a thing."
"What did it feel like for you?"
"Well, babe, I wasn't changed. I was born this way. I guess I should explain that there are 2 types of wolves, Purebloods and those we change. Both of my parents were werewolves and they gave birth to me."
Before I could say anything the waitress returned with our drinks. She had reapplied her makeup, unbuttoned the top 4 or 5 buttons of her blouse and sprayed on some perfume. She was so totally trying to get his attention. She set down our drinks and asked, "What can I get you to eat?"
Jacob turned to me and I ordered, "I would like the pancake meal, with scrambled eggs and bacon."
She scribbled it down and turned to Jacob. "And for you handsome?"
He kept his eyes locked with mine as he said, "The Country boy steak breakfast, steak done medium well, eggs scrambled and hash browns."
She leaned closer to him and he finally averted his eyes, "That's all we need. Thank you."
His tone made the hairs on my arms and the back of my neck stand up. Her eyes got wide before she nodded and backed away quickly. Jacob sighed heavily and suddenly looked exhausted, "What's wrong?"
He smiled trying to hide it and replied, "Nothing." I gave him a cryptic look and his smile faltered, "Babe don't look at me like that."
Now it was my turn to smile, "Why not?"
He leaned forward, "My job as your mate is to protect you, not the other way around."
I leaned forward now only inches from his face and his mask slipped off, "What's the point of being in a relationship if you're partner isn't honest with you?'
His eyes widened before a smile graced his face, "Ok fine I'll cave and tell you. When I use my awful tone, with holds authority over normal humans and lower class werewolves, I get exhausted. It takes a lot out of you."
Curiosity spiked and I had to ask, "What are the lower class werewolves?"
"Well the top of the chain is the alpha and his mate, or wife, the luna, after that is the beta, and sometimes a third in command but that's rare. After that it's just normal pack members. We have elders but they lack any authority unless they were an alpha. Like, for example, my father who is the previous alpha still holds authority over my pack even though he's not the current alpha but the old beta doesn't have any authority."
I was thoughtful for a minute, but then blushed as I realized that I will be Luna of his pack when he changes me. He seemed to know what I was thinking because he said, "You're already luna, it's just not 100% official until I mark you."
Feeling a bit guilty I asked, "What happens if I don't choose you and that never happens?"
He was quiet but I saw the emotions cross his face, anger, sadness, guilt, then hope. "If you don't choose me then Our pack has no luna and I can be challenged for my alpha position. It's a fight between two wolves for the position. At that point any wolf can challenge me and possibly win. An alpha isn't full until he has his luna, he's like a half empty glass."
Before I could say anything the waitress was back. She practically threw down our plates and took off without asking if we needed anything else. I glared at her really upset now. Jacob chuckled from his seat causing my glare to change from her to him. "What's so damn funny?"
He closed his lips trying not to laugh before he replied, "You look so cute when you're upset I just couldn't help it."
My glare softened to a scowl, "She's not getting a tip."
He raised his hands in surrender and we started to eat. Now my choice affected more than just Jacob, Ethan and myself. Come to find out it affects an entire pack. Jeez, can there be any more pressure to deal with.
