Chapter 38: A sombre silence

A sewerage river ran alongside the road, which just added more potency to the overwhelming stink. Huts stood inside this river, and women were trying to move furniture around which were balanced on their heads to get out. Along the river fires burnt in bolas while other women tried to cook food over the open flames. The stench permeating the air combined with the putrid air could be smelled in the cab and fits of muffled coughs could be heard as the small group passed.

“How do they live here?” Tanya asked, her eyes burning from the vapour inside. She and Dirk were taking turns with the tank. The fresh air the only thing that kept them sane. How people lived under these circumstances were questionable.

Patrick didn’t utter a word since he got back in the truck. Tanya tried to talk to him, but he refused to say anything. Now they just watched the horror-filled sights unfolding in front of them. He was clearly in pain, but was refusing any offers to help.
