“We have to go down now and get out as quick as possible. Are you ready?” his tone told her more than he was willing to admit.
She knew he was as terrified as she was of the task that awaited them. Her own fear was scratching at every pore to be released.
She wanted to say no. Her body was shaking so much that she struggled to think. She couldn’t do this. He touched her arm and asked again, “Are you okay?”
She looked at him with pleading eyes, her whole body telling her to say no. But she nodded that she was ready.
“Tanya, tell me you are ready? Otherwise, we turn back and go home, now.” Dirk asked again. This time his serious tone brooked no argument from her.
Another thud on the roof shook her out of her stupor and she finally said, “Yes, let’s go.”
“You are one hell of a brave woman.” he said softly enough for her ears only. She gave him a nervous smile in return, appreciating the incentive.
Right now, she didn’t feel brave at all.
