Chapter 44: Inside the room

After a couple seconds of heaving, they felt the lever give a faint click. Dirk shifted the beam of light and they could see a small opening in the panels.

He tried to force it open, but it was no use. She tapped on his shoulder and told him to hand her his torch. She missed her grip on the handle and the light tumbled down into the abyss. She scrambled after it, but it was too late: They watched as the light spiralled down, illuminating the face of what looked like a human body – decayed, eaten away by the water and its inhabitants. Panic gripped her again, but Dirk showed her to calm down – panic would only waste valuable oxygen - and quickly nudged at the door again with his shoulder. She refused to think what else could be in the water with them. Not now.

This time the door gave way, giving them a small gap. They would never fit.
