They were walking towards the hill, though with small, limped steps. Their feet bloodshot. Tanya thought of taking Mercia’s boots but felt awkward. Now the rough terrain made her think twice about her decision.
They were already too far away to turn back so she had to cope. They were climbing over fallen trees, and through ditches that were not there minutes ago.
Instead of climbing up they continued straight along the hill where Mercia had been running. Now it was unstable, and gravel continued to roll down, causing a spray along the way. They scrambled through another ditch, the next moment boulders came crashing down from the top and Steve got her out of the way just in time from one that aimed straight for her.
They continued until the open mine quarry opened up before them and stopped on top of the edge of the mine. There was no life as far as they could see.
