While I was walking in Delfino's direction, I was thinking about Max and where he is now. I didn't know if I should listen to his ex-wife and never look for him again or try to contact him. It was pretty obvious she had a kind of a problem with him, but maybe if we happened to be together we'd be perfect. Although I knew I should forget him, he was still on my mind.
Eventually, I came to the Delfino and entered, all those feelings I felt back then rushed back at me like an avalanche and it made me dizzy. I scanned the room to see who was behind the counter and guess what. It was Matt. That Matt who made the pizza for us when I met Max.
'Hello, can I take your order?' he started talking to me, 'wait a minute, you are the girl that met that guy here and you were staring at each other not saying anything. I remember you, I said I'd remember you and that you should come back, and we can talk more, right?'
I was shocked. He remembered. How was that even possible. 'Wow, you remember me. I can't believe it. It was a long time ago.'
'I remember people I like, and I liked you…' he faltered.
'Okay, this is perfect. I don't have much to do at the moment, I just graduated, and I am not sure what am going to do next. I need to focus on something else for a while, what do you think about getting a cup of coffee with me after you're done here?' I desperately needed to talk to somebody about something different than job opportunities and my future. And although I might have sounded desperate I didn't have many choices.
'Yes, sure, why not. Such a great idea. I finish here at 5 so will you meet me here then?' I could feel the excitement in his voice.
'Yes sure, and can I order a pizza right now, because I am starving?'
'Sure, one cappriciosa?' he smirked.
'Wow, you even remember that? I wouldn't expect you to remember it.'
'That's the only thing I should remember since I'm a "pizza guy" as you called me back then.' we both burst into a laugh.
'Well, okay then, one cappriciosa for me and a bottle of water, please.'
I took my pizza and the water and left the place, wondering what we're going to do with Matt. He seemed like such a nice guy; I was really surprised at how much he remembered. I could never remember this much about someone I met just once in my life. I could barely remember my name, no I am kidding, but seriously, my memory is not so efficient. Anyhow, back to Matt. He was also quite charming, I think he was Italian or at least half Italian, you could see it in his traits. He had well-tended short dark brown hair, lifted a bit, a nice-looking beard, and even when he wore a loose shirt, you were able to tell he had a very muscular body. He had rolled up one's sleeves and so you could see the well-defined muscles on his forearms. He had quite a deep voice, but like in a sexy way, you know.
I ate my pizza outside in the park and then I went to the museum, basically procrastinating my time there while I was waiting for Matt to finish at work. I was examining the paintings, and because I was mayor at art I knew a lot about them. I enjoyed being smart and for real knowing it. I had an idea I could start telling people around me facts to teach them something new, but I figured it would be annoying. As I was looking at the paintings I started thinking about my future and my future job. Where could I use art? I regrated I haven't chosen something else to major in, but what happened, happened.
The time has come, it was four fifty as I stepped in the Delfino. Matt was already changing his outfit and there was a guy I didn't know behind the counter.
'Can I take your order, madam?' he asked me.
'No, you can't Zack. She is here for me. Is that right…' Matt looked at me waiting for me to say my name.
'Lily, Lily Williams.' I blurted.
'Lily, is that right?'
'Yes, it is, I am here for you.'
'Matt you don't even know her name, how do you know her?' Zack said chuckling.
'Oh, shut up Zack, we've known each other for what, three years?'
'Yes, I guess.' I answered thoughtfully, counting it in my head.
'See, enjoy work today, mate, we have to go. We don't have much time.' I was perplexed, what did he mean, "we don't have much time", I supposed he had some sort of a plan prepared. He came closer to me as he was walking to the door, then opened it for me so I could walk out. I said goodbye to Zack and with that, we left.
'So, what are we going to do? Do you have a plan?' I asked him out of curiosity.
'Actually, yes, I was wondering what you could like and I got this idea. What do you think about going to the movies?' he looked at me and he was hoping I would say yes. He seemed more nervous.
'That is a great plan, indeed, but what movies?' I thought it was a very good idea because in a cinema you shouldn't talk so it's not that weird when you're quiet.
'Okay, there is this cinema it is called Cinema at Selfridges and they are organizing a movie marathon. There are supposed to be mainly old films, like from the 70s, 80s maybe older, but I am a fan of those films and I hope so are you.'
'Oh yes, you bet I am a huge fan, I love those.'
'Phew, I was worried you wouldn't like it. There should also be some old Italian and French movies so it will get a little romantic I reckon. I hope you don't mind.'
'No, totally not, that's what I love about those movies.' I replied with a smile. He smiled at me and we headed to the cinema.
We were talking so much, that someone who wouldn't know we met only twice would think we have known each other since forever. He was so cute and smart, which surprised me, he was still a pizza guy. He knew so much about everything, history, art even biology or chemistry. Yes, we got to chemistry in our conversation somehow. I couldn't figure out why didn't he do something else for a living. He must have loved his job.
Then we talked about me and my future, I told him I don't have a clue what I am going to do. He seemed pretty interested in my future so he was trying to help me figure it out.
'You know what you should do, you should go to a jungle, take off your clothes, put on some leaves, and live there with jungle people. This way you wouldn't have to worry about money and stuff. It'd be a peaceful life.' His ideas like this one always ended up in laughter. I loved spending time with him, although we knew one another properly for quite a short time.
After all the talking and laughing, we arrived at the cinema. We went in.
'How much is it? I want to pay by myself.' I told him because I'd feel embarrassed if he paid for me. 'You don't have to pay anything, I've already bought the tickets.' He said and took two tickets out of his pocket. He handed me one of them. I decently took it.
'Well, thank you, but you didn't have to do this for me. I could have just paid for myself.' I was a bit confused, but at the same time, I was delighted. He just cared about me too much considering the time we knew each other for.
We sat down to our seats, there were the perfect seats, in the middle, so you were able to see the whole screen clearly. The first film to play was As good as it gets, starring Jack Nicholson, who was one of my favorite actors. I knew that film well, but I was looking forward to seeing it again. When the film started, Matt looked at me and smiled. He looked so happy at that moment. Then he turned his head back to the screen. I had the chance to see his side profile and wow, was he some kind of an angel, because he was perfect. I got lost in my thoughts and didn't even notice when Matt turned at me.
'What are you looking at? Me?' he asked laughing quietly.
'What? No! Why would I be looking at you, haha?' I felt abashed and turned my head to the screen, pretending I am paying attention to the movie. In fact, I was turning red. I was probably looking like a big fresh tomato.
The film was in its half and I was finally enjoying it, not feeling abashed, as I felt somebody looking at me. I turned my head to Matt, who was staring at me. It could have seemed a little scary, but he was so pure. We locked eyes and I thought he was going to kiss me. We leaned closer and as our lips were about to meet the power went off and the screen turned black. We both shrunk back and didn't finish the kiss...
