“Is there anything that we the authorities should know about? Especially if it’s happening at home? You can come to us, we know your family is powerful but you know we will protect you right?" Feeling touched by his concern for her, Eires was amused that this human thought he could protect her from her family.
Something is definitely happening up at home she was tempted to say but as alluring as the thought of being taken away from her family sounds, there was no human powerful enough to protect her from the wrath of the Woolridge pack and it's alliances if she ever decided to announce to the world that werewolves lived amongst them. Come to think of it, she was about ninety percent sure that Hank would this she was fooling around again should she ever tell him that there was a werewolf infestation up in the North ridge woods.
"Oh come on Hank, how could you even think that I would need protecting. I'm the goddess of chaos after all." Eires answered with a wink.
Seeing the determined looked that was set on Hank's forehead. Eires was surprised when Hank decided to try again but this time with a softer approach “I just want to understand you better. It’s just that you’ve been here a lot this past year. I mean an incident here and there is probably normal for rebellious teens especially those who comes from powerful families, but this?"
Before she could get in another word to defend herself Officer Breman continued "It does raise a lot of questions on what could be so bad that you’d rather be spending time in our holding cell instead of the comforts of your own home.”
"As much as I disagree with my dad on virtually everything, I am honestly just bored out of my mind at home. There really isn’t anything to tell, I was always the quiet kid but after that rumour last year people were finally taking notice of me. You could say it's nice to finally start making friends.”
Flipping her hair and staring down at her fingernails once again, Eires hoped that her answer was enough to shake Hank of her scent.
"Eires I cannot protect you unless..." but before Hank could finish his sentence they were rudely interrupted when the room door swung open revealing a very disheveled Cole. “I think we’d better be going now Eires.” Cole asserted without even acknowledging Hank.
‘Great’ Eires thought to herself. After that display of bravado, she was sure as hell that Hank was already mentally putting together all the files and evidence he needed to build a case against her family for domestic abuse.
“Well isn’t somebody in a mood today. Thanks for the lovely chat Hank but as you can see Cole is just being an overprotective older brother.”
staring directly at Cole hoping he gets the message to snap out of it, Eires gave officer Breman one last wink before she walked out of the investigation room.
"Right, my apologies Hank. We were all just so worried when we heard what happened and Dad is hosting all these potential investors from
out of town tonight. The stress must have gotten to me. Thanks for taking such good care of her again. I’d be sure to let deputy commissioner Gonzales know how great you were in handling the situation. Now if you would excuse us, we'd really have got to be heading back home." Cole said, trying to sound calm before he followed Eires out the door.
"What were you thinking Eires, you could have gotten seriously hurt." Eires snorted at his lame attempt to sound worried for her safety.
She felt like his acting skills still needed much improvement but she was definitely not going to comment on that. Sliding into the
passenger seat of Cole's car, Eires wondered what had really held Cole up.
Hearing him let out a deep frustrated sigh, Cole then said "I had hoped that you would have finally outgrown this habit of
drawing all these unwanted attention to yourself. It feels like we’ve had this conversation a million times and yet here we are talking about it again. ”
Shifting the car into drive, Cole slowly pulled out of the police station and onto the road heading home. “I can’t believe this is the second time I’m saying it this week but which part of keeping a low profile do you not comprehend? What was going through your head this time when you decided yet again to pull another new idiotic stunt." Cole lashed out in frustration.
“Are you done being crabby? May I just point out that maybe you should have had this conversation with the she-wolves
who tried to attack me for sport last year. I'm pretty darn sure if that incident happened in any other pack, those she-wolves would have been banished at the very least or at the very worse - hunted down, for threatening their Alpha's pup.” Eires said nonchalantly.
Knowing full well she was right, Cole decided he needed to back down and leave her well enough alone. She may not shift on a full moon but she sure as hell has the same level of ferociousness as any other Lycan he knew. Funnily enough up until last year, Cole had always thought his baby sister was the most harmless person in their pack. Never in his wildest imagination would he believe that his sister could single handedly take down four omegas without sustaining any real injuries herself. He never once saw her at combat practice which was supposed to be a requirement for all young wolves regardless of gender but somehow when it comes to Eires their father had decided she didn’t need it. His father had almost verbatim said 'Eires would only be a hindrance to the defense of the pack if there ever was a need for it.'
Oblivious to the inner thoughts of her brother, Eires counted the days till graduation where she would just pack up what little possessions she had accumulated over the years and just leave. For as long as she can remember she had always wished she wasn’t born with Lycan blood. Ok well that is not true, she only started wishing that after her mum had died. She remembered as a child she was not only so well loved but also so very spoilt by both her parents.
All that changed after Eires’s 12th birthday where despite having being born to one the oldest alpha families out there, she hadn't shown any signs of being able to shift. Even normal pups who came from weak omega families could shift after their 11th birthday so her not being able to shift after her 12th birthday was definitely not normal. This was about the exact time when her mother had begun acting strange. The Luna of the Woolridge pack had gone from being warm and loving to cold and distant. Though the change was only gradual at first but Ellen Deluna choose to distance herself more and more with each new moon cycle. Towards the end of her life, she would hide herself in her bedroom for days on end. When her mother had killed herself it was her father who had found her along with a piece of written confession.
In that letter, her mother explained to her father that she could no longer go on with the guilt of betraying her mate. Although she always
suspected Eires to have been a byproduct of a passionate night spent with a stranger, she always had hoped that she would be wrong. Knowing that Eires could not shift had proven her theory right and she would rather die than have to leave the pack disgraced and rejected by her mate.
From that day onwards her father was never the same. It took her Father months to recover from such a blow, granted he didn’t turn rogue but on
days where the moon was full some members of the pack could see an unnatural bloodlust cloud his eyes while out on their runs. When her father finally returned to the house, he simply ignored her, gone were the warm embraces and the loving tone, in its place was a wall of indifference. Her father didn’t command her to leave the pack nor did he disown her, he simply pretended she wasn’t there. Nowadays, she tried very hard to forget the days where her life was perfect, because whenever she reminisced about the good times it just brought on all kinds of emotions that she didn’t particularly want to delve into.
As their house started to come into view, Eires noticed that their driveway was lined with many cars from out of state. Something big must be happening tonight for so many people to be showing up at their house like this. “Something big happening tonight?” Eires asked as Cole parked his car in the garage.
“Just stay in your room tonight, dad’s hoping for an alliance between our pack and some of the other powerful families. The ceremony started
half an hour ago, I won’t tell dad you got into trouble again if you promise me you’ll stay out of trouble until at least Christmas” Cole said sternly.
“You do realize that it’s only January right?” Eires retorted.
“You’re killing me Eiry, how about until my birthday? As an early birthday present?” Cole said as he tried to give her his best puppy dog eyes.
Grabbing her bag from Cole’s car, she let out a smile “Fine, but only because you’re my favourite brother.”
“I’m your only brother”. Cole said as he engulfed her in a hug.
“Precisely. Anyways, I don't want to keep the Deluna heir away in whatever ancient ritual that’s going on. " Eires said as she tried to extricate herself from Cole's hug.
Giving a look because he hadn't explicitly heard her promise him. Eires gave out a sign and said "Yeah, yeah alright I promise to keep out of trouble until your birthday. Happy now? You have my explicit promise.”
Pleased with her answer, Cole nodded and waited until he heard the click on the door to Eires's room before he shifted back into his wolf form. As much as he loved his sister, she sure can be a big pain in the ass.
