Chapter 17

Doctors and patients. What a fine lot we are.Part 2: A Weekend in the Sierras

10: Runaway Train

Friday Morning

To say Guy had misgivings about the weekend trip would be somewhat of an understatement. Yet, he was amazed so far. Everything seemed—a big seemed—to be going off without a hitch. Hal woke early that morning, kissed his partner passionately, and then cheerfully set about seeing to the final arrangements. Now, sitting in the van beside his lover, Guy made a mental checklist of the day’s events:

Patients arrived at the office for their departure on time.

Hal delivered on his promise and rented an extra-large van, freshly serviced, lubed, oiled, gassed up, and ready to go.

He packed the car early that morning with several Trader Joe’s carry-ons containing the best wines, cheeses, breads, meats, and veggies, as well as three or four different frozen desserts.

They were halfway en route to the southern part of the Sierras and right on schedule, as Hal had promised.
