Winter on the island continued to be bleak and cruel. The temperature often dipped below zero, and for the first time in memory, great blocks of ice formed on the lake making it difficult for the boatman to ferry hospital staff back and forth to their shifts. Many Devonshire personnel, including Bishop, came down with a hacking cough, and a severe cold that kept them from work for days on end. Shorthanded, the rest of the remaining staff struggled to do their jobs and meet the children’s daily health and medical requirements.
