Mama places a fresh mug of coffee on the table, next to Corey’s card. She pats me on my shoulder and instructs, “I’m leaving the room. You sit down and take care of that card.”

“Mama,” I whisper, “should I?”

Her fingertips rub my shoulder, comforting me. “That man cares about you, Gage. This is just a rough time the two of you are going through. Don’t disappoint yourself by not reading it.”
