“I hope so.” I picked up the letters she brought in for my signature and handed them back to her after signing.

Lou Ann cocked her head. “I never cared for Anton when I worked at that firm, but that S.O.B. didn’t deserve to be killed.”

I opened my mouth but stopped. I wanted to tell her about Anton’s offer before he got shot. Now, with Anton dead, and Jessica raising the rent it, it seemed pointless. I, and my law practice, was bleeding dry. I couldn’t touch the rest of the money that Frank’s sister gave me because I hadn’t earned the fees yet. If Frank didn’t take a plea, his case went to trial. I wouldn’t be able to afford the experts like a DNA expert, and the fingerprint expert, and keep this office running.

“Jake, were you going to say something?”

I shook my head. Lou Ann walked to her desk. By January, I wouldn’t be in this building. By Frank’s trial, Lou Ann wouldn’t be around and I’d have to file for personal bankruptcy. 15
