Chapter 44

“Say something, Jake.”

“I’m in shock. When were you planning to tell me?”

“Lower your voice,” she implored. “I was going to tell you after I told you that Gary had proposed to me.” 23

Lou Ann handed me a glass of water and the pain meds. “That agent’s here to see you again.”

“Lou Ann, stop waiting on me. Please.” I sipped the water and then popped the pills.

She handed me his business card, before I harrumphed.

“I might as well get this over with.”

Lou Ann stood by and then walked in front of me through the narrow hallway from the guest room. I paused in front of the mirror, placed halfway to the living room. More gray hair appeared at the temples. The cut on my face had healed nicely but dark circles still appeared under my eyes.

Lou Ann had gushed about this guy, but I couldn’t care less if Brad Pitt walked in the door. As I got to the living room, the agent stood from the couch.

Of course, Lou Ann’s descriptions were accurate.
