Chapter 25

They were on the stairs when the front door opened, both men stopping like rabbits caught in the glare of a set of headlights.

“There you are,” said Tom. “Just as well I left my wallet behind. And thank you, Joseph. Your true colours finally exposed.”

Joseph cleared his throat.

“I asked him to help me,” said Dale, recommencing his journey down the stairs. “Don’t try to stop me, Uncle Tom. The taxi’s on its way.”

“Listen Dale, can’t we talk? Joseph, if you don’t mind.”

Joseph took his cue from Dale, who nodded.

“I’ll be all right,” he said. “Thank you for your kindness.”

Joseph bowed his head and hurried down the stairs, avoiding eye contact with his employer.

“Shall we go into the library?” said Tom, gesturing towards the large room to the left of the entrance hall.

Dale nodded and followed his uncle. Once inside Tom closed the door and took Dale in his arms. He attempted to kiss him but Dale turned away.

“It’s like that, is it?” said Tom stepping away.
