Katie shook her head as she crossed her long arms and frowned. “I’m sorry, Alexis. I guess this case is getting to me more than I realized.”
“It’s getting to all of us, Katie.” Alexis sighed as she stepped closer and placed a reassuring hand on Katie’s arm. Lately Katie had been so shut off and locked down that Alexis honestly felt sorry for her. “You look like you haven’t slept much,” Alexis said; a statement more than a question as she focused on Katie’s tired face. Normally, Katie’s eyes had a slight sparkle to them, but today they appeared dull and listless. Darkened bags stretched beneath both eyes and tiny wrinkles furrowed when she attempted to smile.
“I think I forgot what that even was,” Katie replied with a sigh. Katie turned to Alexis and tilted her head. “There’s something different about you today.”
“What do you mean,” Alexis asked nervously.
