Chapter 7

She knew she was being pursued, but she had no idea why anyone would want her so badly. She had nothing of value except maybe her necklace. It was a flashy pendant, she had to admit, but she’d had it all her life. She fingered the thin leather thong around her neck, then pulled the stone out from her shirt to look at it.

The necklace had been with her when Ford found her as a baby on the Jai Steppes. The pendant was a deep blood-red stone, which Ford called a Garnet. It was about two inches in diameter, perfectly round and smoothed until it gleamed.

It was the only clue she had to whoever she might’ve been before she became Ford’s daughter. But why would anyone want it? She didn’t know, and slipped it back underneath her tunic.
