Chapter 4

Webster’s voice held a smile as he said, “I’ve got a lamp that does to pitch by, I’m fine. It’s not complicated.”

Kevin stopped at the flat place just beside the trees that he’d been thinking of. People had camped here before with permission and it was a good spot. He gestured. “Here?” he said, turning to face Webster.

Webster nodded, looking around as much as he could in the dim light. “This is perfect. Thank you.”

Kevin nodded. “You’re welcome. I’ll see you tomorrow, maybe? It’s Saturday, isn’t it?” His voice lightened and then he remembered and groaned. “I’ve got to sort out the bloody car. But apart from that I’m around all weekend.”

Webster gave a chuckle. “I’ll come and say goodbye before I go,” he said. “I’ve got no fixed plans, though.”

Kevin nodded in the darkness. “Goodnight then,” he said, and turned his back and continued on the path to where it opened out again at the bottom of his garden and thence up to the house.
