We ran through it a couple of times in both directions. When we were back in the choir pews, Tom said, “Now, Zeke. Why don’t you lead Josh to the altar rail for communion?”
“We leave the pew from the opposite end and follow the person ahead of us, right?” Zeke said.
“Yes,” Tom said. “Then you kneel and extend your cupped hands for the wafer just like you did on Sunday.”
“We’ll do our best,” Zeke said.
We ran through the process a few times, and Zeke said, “Feel better about it?”
“Yeah,” I said. “Tom, is it okay if I don’t actually sing or for that matter carry my music?”
“Sure, but why?”
“Because I know how many steps there are from the back of the church to the steps. I’m not sure I can count steps and sing at the same time. Maybe after I’ve done it a few times, but not yet. And I don’t know how I can hold a music folder in front of me and manage to hold someone’s elbow or, for that matter, the cane. Maybe we could have my music left in the choir pew for when I get there?”
