Chapter 102

“Don’t keep us in suspense,” one woman said. “Besides, we can see that Noah’s brother is with us today.”

“That’s not the announcement,” he said. “We had a bit of excitement over the weekend. As you may recall, Noah’s father was arrested some time back for taking a swing at me. During Christmas, Bobby managed to let their father know that he had two gay sons, and a family row ensued. Their father drove to Jacksonville in the wee hours Friday night and broke into our old house. He took a shot at one of our tenants, and the other tenant shot him. Nobody had told him that we’d moved.”

“How’s your tenant?” Agnes said.

“It was a flesh wound. He’ll be out of the hospital by tomorrow.”

“Shot him dead?” one of the men said.

“As a doornail.”

“I saw something about a failed burglary attempt and a fatality on the news yesterday,” Agnes said, “but I didn’t connect the dots.”
