Chapter 109

They returned to Father DeVaney’s office and compared Tom’s calendar with the church calendar, selecting two tentative dates to be settled upon later.

Noah got behind the wheel of the BMW and drove them to his father’s house. He discovered that his key to the front door still worked, and they went inside. The first thing they noticed was that the house was very untidy.

“Mom used to keep this place spotless,” Bobby said. “I guess Dad didn’t bother hiring a cleaning lady after the divorce.”

Bobby and Chad began the task of gathering those belongings that Bobby had left in his room, and Noah and Tom went in search of suitable burial garments. Noah found a fairly new suit in his father’s closet, and said “This ought to fit—I’ve seen him wearing it, and. I don’t think he gained any significant weight in the last year.”

They found a decent shirt and tie to match.

“Do they put shoes, socks, and underwear on dead people?”

“I’ve no idea. Why don’t we take them, just in case.”
