Chapter 25

“Mike is a pilot and has access to a plane,” I said. “They fly into Asheville and rent a car.”

Mom cooked a huge breakfast for us Sunday morning, and Carl and Jim insisted on taking all of us out to lunch before Mom and Dad drove back to Charlotte. We enjoyed our time with Carl and Jim and were sorry to leave Thursday morning, but we had to go. Kevin and I planned to purchase our textbooks Friday, just in time for the coming term, which began the following Tuesday.

We plunged into our final undergraduate year, and November arrived almost before we knew it. Kevin suggested that we clean the house thoroughly from top to bottom.

“Why?”

“Because I’ve been in your mother’s house, and it’s spotless. It won’t hurt us to show her that she trained you properly.”

“Okay,” I said with a sigh of resignation.
