Chapter 27

When the subject somehow changed to my parents’ home church in Charlotte, Tom said, “You have a Goulding & Wood pipe organ, don’t you? I’ve heard good things about it.”

“Yes, we do,” Mom said. “It was installed back in the early nineties, and the members like it very much.”

“Great,” Tom said. “I’d love to come play it sometime.”

They only stopped talking when Father Cullen asked for silence so that he could give the invocation and blessing.

Later, sitting in the den with glasses of wine in hand, Mom couldn’t stop talking about the dinner. “I haven’t had such a wonderful Thanksgiving meal since I was a girl,” she said. “When I was growing up, my family had a huge reunion every Thanksgiving. Those people were so warm and friendly, it took me back to those days.”

“Yeah,” Dad said. “So much for the old wives’ tale about Episcopalians being ‘God’s frozen people’.”
