Chapter 28

“You boys come with me,” Dad said. “There’s something I want to show you.”

We followed him out to his car, and he told us to get in. I climbed in the front seat with Dad and Kevin got in back. Dad drove a few blocks over to Cassat Avenue, turned right, and headed north. About a half-mile south of I-10, he turned into the driveway of a medium-sized brick house surrounded by tall pine trees. There was a car in the driveway with a Realtor’s logo on its door, and we were met at the door by a middle-aged man who turned out to be the Realtor.

Dad introduced us to the Realtor, and then we walked through the house. It had two large bedrooms and one smaller bedroom, and the living room and dining room were one big room. We learned that it had until recently been occupied by a small business whose owner had managed his finances badly.
