Chapter 49

“Wally World?”

“Also known as Walmart.”

“Why didn’t you just say Walmart?”

As we drove out Normandy Boulevard to the nearest Walmart, Kevin said, “Babe, you never stop surprising me.”

“What do you mean?”

“The way you jumped in and said we’d take Anthony.”

“What was I supposed to do, just sit there? It wouldn’t have been right to turn him down. I wonder if your brother knew we’d take the kid before he got on the airplane?.”

“I doubt it. He doesn’t know me that well.”

“On the other hand, he surely knows that you’re a decent man. And your mother surely must have told him what kind of life we’re building here in Jacksonville.”

“Yeah, you’re probably right. Too bad I can’t disown him—and my sister too, for that matter.”

“Don’t worry about it. You never see them anymore, anyhow.”

“That’s true, and I’ll tell you something else.”

“What?”

“I didn’t, for one minute, buy his ‘acceptance’ of gay men talk.”
