Chapter 50

“Me, neither,” Kevin said, “but I’ve just had a happy thought.”

“What?” Grandma said.

“If we do a good job with Anthony, maybe he’ll be the ideal candidate to inherit the farm one day.”

“Yeah,” she said, “that gives us something to work toward, doesn’t it?”

“I wonder how Anthony is going to react tomorrow morning?” I said. “He’s going to wake up in a house full of people he doesn’t know.”

“I asked Gloria about that,” Grandma said. “She kind of beat around the bush a bit, but I finally dragged it out of her: Adam and his wife used to leave Anthony with other people a lot while they were out partying—he and his girlfriend did the same thing, until they left him with Gloria. Anyway, he’s used to waking up in strange places.”

“It sounds like that little boy needs a lot of love,” I said.

“Amen to that,” she said.

“Anybody want a refill?” Kevin said.

“Yes,” I said.

“I’m okay,” Grandma said.
