Chapter 68

“I guess I’d better go upstairs and pack,” I said. “Excuse me, ladies.”

I hurried upstairs and rounded up both David’s and my shaving kits from the bathroom. Then I packed our overnight bags, and by the time David came upstairs, we were ready to roll. “You can double-check the bathroom, if you like,” I said, “but I don’t think I missed anything.”

“That’s okay. Do you think we should say good-bye to Anthony?”

“Not if we have to wake him up to do it. With Grandma here, and the distractions provided by Robbie and the other children, he’ll be okay.”

“Yeah,” he said, “you’re probably right. Shall we go downstairs?”

“Let’s.”

We left our bags in the foyer and returned to the sunroom. Charles spotted us and said, “Are you guys about ready?”

“Yeah,” David said. “Our bags are in the foyer.”

“Grandma,” I said, “we decided not to wake Anthony up just to say good-bye to him. As long as you’re here when he wakes, I think he’ll be okay.”
