Chapter 69

“Hi, Grandma,” I said. “We’re on the way to the hospital now. … Chest pains—they won’t have complete test results until tomorrow morning. How’s Anthony? … Good. Can I talk to him? … Okay, bye.”

“Anthony’s fine,” I said, “and George is going to take his cell phone up to the playroom and call me back.”

“Playroom?” Russell said.

“Dad,” David said, “their house is huge. In fact, it’s more like a mansion. Charles and Philip have six little boys, and what used to be the attic has been converted into a playroom for the kids.”

“How in the world do two men manage to have six children?” Russell said.

“By hiring surrogate mothers,” I said. “When you have the kind of money these guys do, you can arrange that sort of thing.”

“You can’t imagine how big their place is,” David said. “In addition to Charles, Philip, the six kids, and Charles’ grandmother, there’s also a live-in nanny and Philip’s nephew and his friend.”

“And,” I said, “they still have room for several guests at a time.”
