Chapter 49

“That’s good news,” he said, “but I’ve got even better news.”

“What?”

“Take that little card out of your wallet and call the number, babe. Our test results are back.”

“And?”

“I’m clean, and there’s no doubt in my mind that you are too.”

“Hang up and I’ll do it.”

He did so, and I took the card from my billfold. I called the number, and a mechanical voice told me to punch in the code that was written on the card. I punched the numbers as requested, and there was a pause. A live voice said, “George Martin?”

“That’s me.”

“Your tests were negative for all STDs.”

“Thank you.”

The line went dead.

I called Mike and said, “No condoms tonight, babe.”

“I’ll be waiting.”

I plowed back into the paperwork. I even sent out for a sandwich and ate it at my desk while I worked. By the end of the day, I was absolutely certain that I would be caught up by noon on Friday.
