Chapter 50

“I think you pretty much showed me earlier.”

I covered his mouth with mine for a while. “I’m ready to show you again.”

“Then let me up, and let’s go for it.”

He headed down the hall, and I made sure the house was secure before I followed him. It was a long time before we were ready to turn the lights out and go to sleep.

Friday morning I was at my desk by six thirty, having bypassed the Y, and by noon I was totally caught up. There wasn’t a single scrap of paper in my in-basket and nothing hidden in the box under my desk, where I tended to shove things in the forlorn hope that they’d go away. Janet came to see me just before lunch.

“We did it, boss,” she said proudly, as she tossed not one but two files on my desk.

I examined both of them briefly. “Holy shit, these are old—and really cold—cases.”

“Yes, they are, and they’re solidly solved and closed.”
