We thanked the boys for their referral and headed back down the mountain. When we were well down the hill, I said, “How old do you think that woman is?”
“Judging by appearances, she could be anywhere from forty on up,” Mike said, “but whatever her true age, she’s had a hard life, and it shows.”
“Did you notice how tidy and neat the yard was, and for that matter, the porch?”
“Yes, I did,” he said, “and I’ll give you odds that the house is just as clean and neat inside.”
“I just thought of something we forgot to buy for the cabin.”
“What?”
“A light blanket or a comforter. Remember how cool it was last night in the motel?”
“Take that notebook out,” he said, “and write it down.”
