Thursday evening the phone rang just after dinner. I looked at the caller ID, which displayed our landline number at the cabin. I answered, and the captain brought me up to date on the shower installation. I thanked him and said good-bye.
“Did you get most of that?” I said.
“The shower has been installed to Captain Bridges’ satisfaction?”
“Yes, and the boys have run out of rocks. I’ll order another load in the morning.”
“I gather the Bridges are having a good time.”
“You bet. Sarah doesn’t want to leave. There’s no doubt in my mind that they’ll sell their lake place and buy something up there.”
I arrived home on Friday, pulling into the side driveway as usual. I went straight to the bedroom, changed clothes, and went in search of Mike. I found him on the front porch reading a book. He got up and greeted me with the usual hug and kiss.
“How was your day?” he said.
“Fairly rotten, but I survived.”
“Maybe I can cheer you up.”
“Race you.”
