Chapter 120

When we were ready, Mike said, “Who wants to go first?”

“I will,” one of them said.

“We’ll start with the longest attachment,” Mike said, “and see how you like that.”

In no time, there was a pile of hair on the sheet.

“What do you think?” I said. “Are you Zeb or Zeke?”

“I’m Zeke, and I like it,” he said. “Can we make it shorter?”

In no time, the hair on his head was quickly reduced to buzz cut length. He studied himself in the mirror while Mike used the clippers to taper the hair at his neckline.

“Next,” he said.

Zeb took his brother’s place, and Mike quickly gave him a buzzcut that was identical to his brother’s.

“Now I know how to tell you guys apart,” I said.

“You do?”

“Zeb has a mole on the side of his head, and Zeke doesn’t.”

The next morning, we followed the same routine. We went to the Y, then I went on to the office while Mike took the boys to the house. Sarah picked them up every afternoon and took them to various friends of hers who had lawns needing attention.
